How Do I Grow Taller?

Sleep:

The body produces growth hormones during sleep, specifically, during deep sleep (also known as stage 3 of the sleep cycle), so sleep deprivation can cause the suppression of these hormones and overall, affect the person's growth, so it is important to get the right amount of sleep in order to grow. See below for a brief overview of the guidelines and below that for guidelines in more detail.

  • 6-12 years: 9 to 12 hours / day 1

  • 13-18 years: 8 to 10 hours / day 1

  • 18+ years: 7-9 hours / day 1

  • 0-3 months old: 14-17 hours

  • 4-12 months old: 12-16 hours

  • 1-2 years old: 11-14 hours

  • 3-5 years old: 10-13 hours

  • 6-13 years old: 9-12 hours

  • 14-17 years old: 8-10 hours

  • 18-60 years old: 7+ hours

  • 61-64 years old: 7-9 hours

  • 65+ years old: 7-8 hours

Exercise:

Exercise can make height growth easier. Exercise creates an energy shortage which leads towards the spending of lipids and encourages growth.2

A study examining the responses of growth hormone in relation to exercise found, "endurance exercise elicits a greater GH [,growth hormone,] response than sprint and resistance exercise."

It is clear to see now that exercise can help grow, but how much exercise should be done? Overall, 30 minutes of moderate physical activity is a good target to aim for.

Types of Foods:

Eggs. Eggs are full of protein and vitamin D. The protein can increase growth hormone levels and thus, grow taller according to the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology.

Milk is also packed with nutrition. It is a great source of calcium which plays a vital role in skeletal health.

A study of 874 children demonstrated the affects of egg and milk. Monthly height increases reported among the children were associated with their consumption.

It is important to remember that most will not grow taller after 18-20 since growth plates have closed for most people at that age. However, it has been said stretching can help decompress the spine causing a temporary nominal gain in height, but, note, this effect will soon be reverted as a result of gravity.
